The term "acqua alta" refers to the exceptional tide peaks that occur periodically in the northern Adriatic Sea and which cause the partial flooding of some areas of Venice. The phenomenon occurs mainly between fall and spring, when the astronomical tides are reinforced by seasonal winds, mainly the scirocco and bora, which blow northbound and which hamper the normal outflow of the tides from the Venice lagoon to the sea. Higher tides may be expected during full moon lunar phases. The phenomenon of acqua alta may last as little as a couple of hours or 6 hours or more in case of exceptional tides, being linked to the natural flow of the tides and the actual tide height reached.

When acqua alta occurs, a network of gangways is set up along the main trafficked streets, permitting pedestrian circulation. In case of exceptional flooding, the gangways are not accessible.
